Protemp™ 4 Temporization Material - A reliable partner even in the long run
01 February 2011
Protemp™ 4
Protemp™ 4 material is a bis-acrylic composite that was developed on the basis of a unique nanofiller and monomer technology by 3M ESPE. Based on this innovative formulation, the material offers compelling strength and fracture resistance. These properties result in high stability over time, so that the material is also indicated for long-term temporization. Its convincing clinical properties have already been confirmed by the independent publications like Gordon J. Christensen’s CLINICIANS REPORT and REALITY which emphasized e.g. its high gloss, natural fluorescence, high strength and easy handling.
Recently, the first rating was published which takes into account the long-term clinical performance of temporary crown and bridge materials. It is based on a one year clinical evaluation conducted by The Dental Advisor. The consultants of the independent testing institute placed a total of 145 single- as well as multiple-unit temporaries and assessed them at regular recalls. The categories evaluated were gingival health, lack of sensitivity, glossy appearance and overall aesthetics, resistance to staining, resistance to fracture, ease of repair and interproximal contacts. Very good to excellent ratings were given in all categories. For example, it turned out that the restorations were stable over time and the rare cases of stains e.g. caused by smoking could be easily removed. What is also very remarkable is that initially inflamed tissues healed quickly with the provisional restoration in place.
In all, the product received a 96% rating and thus obtained five plusses. This result indicates that Protemp™ 4 Temporization Material, which will be available in a broader and optimized choice of shades including the new A3.5 option as of April 2011, is a reliable partner for many indications, even in the long run.
