Bonded nanofillers are the reason Filtek Supreme XTE restorative retains its brilliant polish.

The polish retention of Filtek Supreme XTE Universal restorative has been proven to be superior to other composites and even microfills, thanks to the patented process used to build the nanocomposite.

This process creates unique clusters of nanometer-sized particles, these nanoclusters shear at a rate similar to the wear of the surrounding resin matrix during abrasion. This allows the restoration to maintain a smoother surface, meaning the initial impressive gloss will last for years.

A recent 5-year clinical study* measuring "occlusal contact wear", showed no statistically significant difference between Filtek™ Supreme Universal Restorative and enamel.

Figure 1: The patient presented with an insufficient composite and an amalgam filling. A complex restorative procedure was necessary to restore the teeth.

Figure 3: The restoration of tooth 47 is done with a multilayer technique and begins with the shaping of the basal area. A layer of 3M™ ESPE™ Filtek™ Supreme XTE Universal Restorative in the shade A3B is applied and light cured for 20 seconds. At the mesial approximal cavity, a foil matrix is placed with a wooden wedge.

Figure 5: Subsequently, the matrix is removed and the mesiobuccal as well as the distolingual cusp are layered in the enamel shade A2E and polymerized. At this stage, it is useful to copy the natural shape of a cusp.

Restoring a maxillary central incisor

Figure 1: Initial situation with a crown-root fracture in tooth 21. The determined shade according to the VITAPAN® classical A1-D4 shade guide matches A2. Since the edges of the defect lie in the subgingival area, the tooth has to be exposed using electrosurgery.

Polish Retention Versus Microfills

Polish retention was determined by a toothbrush abrasion test.

Composite materials were shaped into tiles and thoroughly cured

  • The surfaces were polished wet using a Beuhler variable-speed grinder-polisher
  • They were stored in water at 37ºC for 24 hours
  • Gloss was measured

The samples were brushed with toothpaste and a toothbrush

  • The toothbrush was mounted on an Automatic Toothbrush Machine
  • Gloss measurements were taken after 500 cycles and then every 1000 cycles
  • The test was terminated after 6000 toothbrush strokes

The wear rate of 3M™ ESPE™ Filtek™ Supreme XTE Universal Restoraive DEB shades and T shades is comparable to the 3-body wear of 3M™ ESPE™ Filtek™ Supreme XT Universal Restorative.

The lower the wear rate, the better the wear resistance. The wear rate of Filtek™ Supreme XTE Universal Restorative DEB shades and T shades is comparable to the 3-body wear of Filtek™ Supreme XT Universal Restorative. In addition our tests have also proven that the 3-body wear of Filtek Supreme XTE universal is lower than a wide range other competitive microfills and universal restoratives on the market.

As the wear in this method typically follows a linear pattern, the data is plotted using linear regression. The wear rates, i.e., the slope of the lines, are determined. The comparison of rates reduces some of the variability in the test due to sample preparation and can be predictive of anticipated wear beyond the length of the actual test.
