Seefeld, May 2013
In 2013, the 3M™ ESPE™ Astringent Retraction Paste received the red dot award for product design 2013. The paste comes in an ergonomic capsule for direct application of the material into the sulcus, allowing for effective mechanical retraction of the gingiva prior to impression taking or direct restorative procedures. Now, its excellent design has been honoured by an international expert jury consisting of 37 renowned professionals.
The fact that the practicability and ease of use of a product is determined to a great extent by its design is well-known. Therefore, the red dot design award – one of the world’s most famous design competitions – counts an increasing number of participants every year. This year, 1,865 companies, architects and designers from 54 different countries submitted applications for more than 4,662 products in 19 different categories – in 2009, the number of products was just 3.231. The selection criteria of the international expert jury included degree of innovation, functionality and the clarity of function, ergonomics, longevity, symbolic and emotional content, product periphery, self-explanatory quality and ecological compatibility of the products.
The 3M ESPE Astringent Retraction Paste received high ratings regarding criteria such as a high degree of innovation, functional and ergonomic design as well as ease of use in itself. The capsule is compatible with a common composite dispenser and enables easy application directly into the sulcus due to its very fine tip. The ergonomic capsule shape makes sure that even posterior teeth and approximal areas can be reached without difficulties. Apart from the mechanical retraction induced by the capsule, the paste enables a clean, dry sulcus area with long-lasting haemostasis.
The product will receive the red dot quality seal on the first of July 2013 during the awards ceremony in the Aalto Theatre in Essen, Germany.
